Swaziland Blog #3: REWIND!!……….. Our Journey to Swaziland

Written by: Jaime Smith

Hello friends and family!! As you know we have arrived safely and are having a great time here in Swaziland! I just wanted to fill you in on the 45-hour long journey we took in order to get here. It was by far the longest and most interesting trip I have ever experienced.

It all started at the Fresno Airport, Monday, July 12th, where the team arrived at 12:30pm. We said our good-byes to family and friends, checked our bags, went through security (where Katie was stopped because of all of the games she had jammed into her backpack), and went to wait at our gate for our plane, which was delayed by an hour.

From Fresno we flew to San Francisco where we would have a 6-hour layover. A few of us decided to venture out into the city during that time. So Rachel, Matt A., Matt R., Adam, Susie, Emily, and I jumped on the BART and went to China Town. We walked around a bit then ate a wonderful meal at The House of Nanking. Then we went back to the airport. While we waited for our plane, Rachel and Katie whipped out a couple of Twister mats and we played in the terminal. It was extremely entertaining to see Matt A. and Taras awkwardly interlinked after every command. (Don’t worry we have pictures!) But in the end, Rachel was the victorious one!

Around 10pm we boarded the plane and headed to New York. In the sky we tried to sleep, some more successful than others. Tuesday morning we landed at JFK and most of us had lost our concept of time and place. Red eye flights will do that to you!

Later that morning we got on the plane to enjoy our 15-hour flight Johannesburg, South Africa. Wednesday morning we landed and all of our 20 pieces of luggage arrived with us! We then got into a van (Kombi) and drove 8 hours through South Africa to Swaziland. We had a few bumps along the way but were encouraged by Chris and Ryan who played their guitars and everyone sang along. Eventually we made it to the Mananga Lodge where we were greeted by Corine and served a wonderful dinner. Then it was shower time and lights out!

Praise God that we were protected and given traveling mercies. Thank you for keeping us in your prayers. We are happy to be here serving God and the Swazi people! We are doing our best to embody our team verse:

“In the same way, let your light shine before man, so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father, who is in heaven.” Mathew 5:16
